Isaiah 64

New International Version

64 ^[a]Oh, that you would rend the heavens^(A) and come down,^(B)
    that the mountains^(C) would tremble before you!
²As when fire sets twigs ablaze
    and causes water to boil,
come down to make your name^(D) known to your enemies
    and cause the nations to quake^(E) before you!
³For when you did awesome^(F) things that we did not expect,
    you came down, and the mountains trembled^(G) before you.
⁴Since ancient times no one has heard,
    no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,^(H)
    who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.^(I)
⁵You come to the help of those who gladly do right,^(J)
    who remember your ways.
But when we continued to sin against them,
    you were angry.^(K)
    How then can we be saved?
⁶All of us have become like one who is unclean,^(L)
    and all our righteous^(M) acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,^(N)
    and like the wind our sins sweep us away.^(O)
⁷No one^(P) calls on your name^(Q)
    or strives to lay hold of you;
for you have hidden^(R) your face from us
    and have given us over^(S) to^[b] our sins.

⁸Yet you, Lord, are our Father.^(T)
    We are the clay, you are the potter;^(U)
    we are all the work of your hand.^(V)
⁹Do not be angry^(W) beyond measure, Lord;
    do not remember our sins^(X) forever.
Oh, look on us, we pray,
    for we are all your people.^(Y)
¹⁰Your sacred cities^(Z) have become a wasteland;
    even Zion is a wasteland, Jerusalem a desolation.^(AA)
¹¹Our holy and glorious temple,^(AB) where our ancestors praised you,
    has been burned with fire,
    and all that we treasured^(AC) lies in ruins.
¹²After all this, Lord, will you hold yourself back?^(AD)
    Will you keep silent^(AE) and punish us beyond measure?

7 What misery is mine!
I am like one who gathers summer fruit
    at the gleaning of the vineyard;
there is no cluster of grapes to eat,
    none of the early figs^(A) that I crave.
²The faithful have been swept from the land;^(B)
    not one^(C) upright person remains.
Everyone lies in wait^(D) to shed blood;^(E)
    they hunt each other^(F) with nets.^(G)
³Both hands are skilled in doing evil;^(H)
    the ruler demands gifts,
the judge accepts bribes,^(I)
    the powerful dictate what they desire—
    they all conspire together.
⁴The best of them is like a brier,^(J)
    the most upright worse than a thorn^(K) hedge.
The day God visits you has come,
    the day your watchmen sound the alarm.
    Now is the time of your confusion.^(L)
⁵Do not trust a neighbor;
    put no confidence in a friend.^(M)
Even with the woman who lies in your embrace
    guard the words of your lips.
⁶For a son dishonors his father,
    a daughter rises up against her mother,^(N)
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
    a man’s enemies are the members of his own household.^(O)

⁷But as for me, I watch^(P) in hope^(Q) for the Lord,
I wait for God my Savior;
my God will hear^(R) me.

Israel Will Rise

⁸Do not gloat over me,^(S) my enemy!
    Though I have fallen, I will rise.^(T)
Though I sit in darkness,
    the Lord will be my light.^(U)
⁹Because I have sinned against him,
    I will bear the Lord’s wrath,^(V)
until he pleads my case^(W)
    and upholds my cause.
He will bring me out into the light;^(X)
    I will see his righteousness.^(Y)

The Faith of the Centurion^(A)

7 When Jesus had finished saying all this^(B) to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. ²There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. ³The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. ⁴When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, ⁵because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” ⁶So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. ⁷That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.^(C) ⁸For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

⁹When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” ¹⁰Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

John 8:12-30

Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony

¹²When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am^(A) the light of the world.^(B) Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”^(C)

¹³The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”^(D)

¹⁴Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.^(E) But you have no idea where I come from^(F) or where I am going. ¹⁵You judge by human standards;^(G) I pass judgment on no one.^(H) ¹⁶But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.^(I) ¹⁷In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.^(J) ¹⁸I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”^(K)

¹⁹Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”

“You do not know me or my Father,”^(L) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”^(M) ²⁰He spoke these words while teaching^(N) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.^(O) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.^(P)

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

²¹Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die^(Q) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”^(R)

²²This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”

²³But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.^(S) ²⁴I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,^(T) you will indeed die in your sins.”

²⁵“Who are you?” they asked.

“Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied. ²⁶“I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy,^(U) and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”^(V)

²⁷They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. ²⁸So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up^[a] the Son of Man,^(W) then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.^(X) ²⁹The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone,^(Y) for I always do what pleases him.”^(Z) ³⁰Even as he spoke, many believed in him.^(AA)
